Guest Speaker

Tonight I get the privilage to speak to the up and coming new advocates for the New Horizon Crisis Phone. I decided to tell them about my first time having the crisis line:

I was so nervous and I remember I went to Key Ingredients after work at 4:30pm and talked to mom about it. They had just rolled the phone over to me and I explained to mom how nervous I was. She just had to say "well, I hope you do get a call." In other words she hoped I got a call so I could get the first call nerves out of the way and not spend the whole week worring about it. Well she sure got her wish! I woke up at 2am to the Marshall Police Dept. asking me to come down to the Hospitial on a sexual assult case. I freaked out! Not only could I NOT talk due to a sore throat I had been struggling through but also cuz I blanked on what to do! But thankfully a cheat sheet with notes in it that came with the phone helped me through the procedure of what had to be done. I woke up a NHCC Staff member who lived close to Marshall since I was 45 min away and sent her there and then drove myself up there.

I about strangled mom the next morning when I told her what had happened. She just laughed while I yawned. However, it was good to be able to experience such a crisis though. It truly prepared me for what was to come in the days after when I had the phone. I have been out on 2 sexual assult calls total in the year I've volunteered for the Crisis Line, and so many crisis phone calls that I can't count. I believe that just being there for those in need is a huge blessing and I hope New Horizon can continue this service.

It has changed my view point in being able to understand the needs and concerns of others in a crisis. Sometimes all they need is someone who will truly just listen to them with out judging them while they talk themselves through a tough time.
